During the pandemic I set-up a virtual interview with upcoming artist Nanshak. Nanshak is a Canadian-based artist of Nigerian descent, who recently released the single “Perfect”. His debut EP titled “Vibes don’t whisper, they scream” was a brief vibe of bubbly afro-fusion with fine tuned melodies and pitches. I reached out to Nanshak to interview him and I was opportuned to speak with him for a lengthy conversation. Below is the fanlink to his most recent single, followed by the contents of the interview.

How has this year been for you? It’s been one of the best years of my life as unlikely as that sounds. I feel like I made gargantuan strides in Self-development and in networking, I met a lot of amazing people this year.
How did this year impact your creative process? It’s amazing how much time we creatives had on our hands this year. This year helped me step-out of the box in my creative process in the sense that I usually created music mostly in the studio only but, this year I randomized my creative process more and just generally let the music come to me.
How did quarantine impact you on a personal level? I have always had an introverted personality, so staying indoors came naturally to me.
What did you do to keep yourself busy and productive during quarantine? I played a lot of Apex Legends, caught up on some Anime and read a couple books, I love to read. Quarantine’s been the shit, so I’ve just been doing me.
Have you achieved all you set out to do this year? Don’t really think its possible to achieve all you set-out to do this year because of the pandemic but I achieved a fair amount and I’m just grateful.
Any message to your fans? Just be Authentic in a world that will want to change you.
What first got you into music? My dad got me into music, growing up in an African home my dad played a lot of Boney M, Lucky Dube, Frankie Valli Kool & The Gang, Prince and Michael Jackson. That’s what I practically listened to everyday on the way to school.
What is your creative process like? I always let the music come to me and flow with ease. I’m a deep-thinker so I write a lot and try to find beats I feel would synchronize perfectly with my lyrics. I could also just be sent a beat by my producer and I’d write on it and see what I can come up with. Creativity always ebbs and flows so I really love to take things slow when making music.
Who would you like to collaborate the most with? I’d love to make music with Wizkid or Tems.
How do you feel the internet has impacted the music business? It has made things easier for independent artists like myself to create and promote our music.
Which artist would you like to open for? Wizkid or Burna boy.
How would you describe the music you create? I would describe my music as Afro-fusion because I make afro-beats that has been heavily influenced by the diaspora.
Do you have a name for your fanbase? I believe it’ll come as part of the journey and I honestly am excited about it.
Can you play any instrument? Yes! The harmonica and the guitar. My dad made me take classes when I was younger.
Which instrument would you like to learn how to play and why? The saxophone just cause Afro-fusion with the sax is crazy.
An artist you plan on collaborating with next. Can’t say, wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise but watch this space.
Why is it important to learn and study old music? It is important because old music is rudimentary and it forms the basis of what we listen to in this moment.
How does your work comment on current social or political issues? Music is a channel through which messages can be passed and I have constantly made reference to the political and societal problems we face in my music.
Who are your biggest influences? I listen to a lot of artists who produce myriads of sounds and I’ve been influenced by these artists along the way but my special mentions in terms of influence have to be Wizkid, Runtown, Drake, Kanye west. These are the artists whose influence you can literally feel when you listen to the music I create.
Would you say you’re in a good space creatively at the moment? Hahaha definitely, yes!
Are you currently working on a new project? Yeah, I can’t talk much about it though.
What’s next for you? Business and promoting my music.
